Buck's Discount Centers, Inc. is the accomplishments, visions, and dreams of Marvin (Bucky) Bordeau and Yvonne Bordeau. Their vision was to create a legacy to pass down to their three children; Cheryl, Nancy, and Robert (Robbie). It is through hard work, family, staff and friend that is has been made possible.
Marvin Bordeau (Buck or Bucky) is the youngest of 15 children of Jenny and Andrew Bordeau .
Yvonne Bordeau is the fifth born out of ten children of Mary and Orlando Bulriss.
In 1955 Marvin (Bucky) Bordeau worked at The Imperial Wallpaper Mill in Plattsburgh, NY and Yvonne Bordeau worked at The Georgia Pacific Paper Mill in Plattsburgh, NY. Bucky's brother Walter Bordeau and his wife Loretta owned and operated an auction house on the Salmon River Rd. in Plattsburgh, NY. It is through his dealings at the auction house that his dreams and visions for his families future came to arise, and thus the beginning of Bordeau's New & Used Furniture..... Bucky and Yvonne began conducting business part time out of their family garage, all the while continuing to work full time at the mills. After saving their earnings and much hard work, together they decided that it was time for them to enter the business world full time. They left their respect jobs, invested their earning, and took a leap of faith..... As their business prospered they decided to expand it’s operations and purchased the Old Protestant Church to house Bordeau's Used Furniture and a Old School House built in1856 located in Beekmantown, NY. This building operated as a Lunchette, until in1969 Phase I construction commenced and a building was erected between the two dwellings known today as Bordeau's New Furniture. The Old Beekmantown Grange Hall was purchased in 1970 and transformed for use as a warehouse. This was followed by Phase II Construction of another building for warehouse storage.
In 1975 through a property purchase they acquired the property of a former Exxon Fuel Station in the Town of Plattsburgh which today is known as Buck’s Discount Center. In the beginning Bucky and Yvonne were unsure of what to do with the property, so they leased the property out. ... A few years later as their eldest daughter Cheryl was graduating from Plattsburgh State University, they decided to try their own hand running a convenience store. Cheryl joined on board and began managing this operation for her parents. The girls continued to work in the family businesses.
A major fire occurred in 1982? resulting in the total loss of the Old Grange Hall Building that was being used as a furniture warehouse. It was a terrible blow to lose such a historic building and all of its contents.
Neither the building nor its contents were covered by insurances. Bucky and Yvonne are no quitters by any means, they looked to their faith ...and so started Phase III construction. They built another two story warehouse building behind Bordeau's Furniture and then started on Phase IV construction of another building which was erected on the property of the former Grange Hall to replace the one destroyed by fire. This building also is currently being used for storage.
In 1989 a major construction expansion Phase V was planned and completed on Buck‘s Discount Center. Therefore doubling the size and operation of the current existing store by adding a Deli Department, Hardware Store, and another Furniture Store. A few years later in Phase VI of the construction plans a Warehouse Building was constructed behind Buck's Discount Center the same size as the Phase V construction. Their Youngest daughter Nancy then joined on board to manage the Furniture Store Operations.
In 2000 Bucky and Yvonne decided to purchase the property of the former Toot -N- Tellem Restaurant. Unsure of what they wanted to do with it, a decision was made to try and keep it as it always had been , a Restaurant. They decided to fix the property up and lease the building out... Then the vision of a Carwash, Laundry Mat, Store, and another Fueling Station ensued, and so Phase VII construction plans arose. This resulted in the property known today as Buck's Plaza. Their son Robert (Robbie) then joined on to help them manage this complex.
Their grandchildren Melissa Goldfarb, Kurtis Coty, Aaron Goldfarb, Kristy Coty and Adam Goldfarb, along with their son in law's Scott Goldfarb and Rick Coty, and their daughter in law Cristina Bordeau; Have all worked or are currently working in some capacity in the family businesses.
Today we are a Three Generation Family Operation.
